I'm a bit of a jack of all trades in the IT Industry, concentrating first and foremost on databases.
I work for a small consulting company based in the southwest of Denver, Colorado.
I primarily work with both Oracle and SQL Server, on multiple platforms (various flavors of Unix and Windows from Server 2000 through Server 2012).
In my current production support responsibilities I look after the following databases:
- SQL Server 2000
- SQL Server 2005
- SQL Server 2008 R2
- Oracle 11g (10.2.0.5)
- Oracle 11g (11.2.0.4)
- Oracle 12c (12.1.0.2)
However, I also do Unix Shell Scripting, Windows CMD Scripting and have a desire to get into Powershell and Perl (but they are still on the list of things to do).
Certifications
- Oracle Certified Professional: Oracle 9i DBA
- Microsoft Certified Information Technology Professional: SQL Server 2008 DBA
In Exile? What's that all about ?
When I first started trolling the Internet back in the middle ages, I used to have "Aussie In Exile" as the signature on my posts to UseNet news groups, since I was an Australian national living in the United States. When thinking of a name for this thing, that popped into my head and I went with it. Seemed a whole lot better than "Steve's Blog" or something.
What is this thing supposed to be for, anyway?
This place for the moment is just somewhere to record interesting tidbits, tips and tricks I've discovered along the way and primarily for my personal reference. However, if someone else finds these posts through the magic of Google and it manages to help them, then we'll consider that an added bonus.
I know a lot more about Oracle than I do SQL Server, so a lot of this may be for SQL Server ... at least to begin with.
What's with's the movie quotes at the top of every blog entry
I'm a big Sci Fi movie geek. I like movie quotes. So, for some giggles, I decided to start each entry with a movie quote. Some are sort of related to the topic at hand, some are just from a movie or TV show I was watching this week. Some might even just be from a webcomic I was reading. Whatever tickles my fancy that day.
